Astronomers have discovered an exoplanet with a tail, like a gigantic comet. The planet, known as WASP-69b, is slowly evaporating in the radiation of its host star.WASP-69b is a gas giant that orbits very close to its host star, meaning it’s a kind of planet often called a Hot Jupiter. That alone isn’t too exciting – those are some of the most commonly found exoplanets out there, because their size and proximity to stars makes them easy to detect. But what’s weird about WASP-69b is its long luxurious tail, which would give it the appearance of a gigantic comet. The intense…

Before the answers to life’s questions fit in our pocket, you used to have to turn a dial. If you were lucky, Phil Donahue would be on, ready to guide you toward enlightenment. In a stroke of deluxe good fortune, Dr. Ruth Westheimer might have stopped by to be the enlightenment. He was the search engine. She was a trusted result. Donahue hailed from Cleveland. The windshield glasses, increasingly snowy thatch of hair, marble eyes, occasional pair of suspenders and obvious geniality said “card catalog,” “manager of the ’79 Reds,” “Stage Manager in a Chevy Motors production of ‘Our Town.’”…

Chinese “Space Transportation” company, Lingkong Tianxing Technology, has successfully tested its new JinDou400, also known as JinDouyun, ramjet detonation engine nearly twice the altitude of commercial passenger planes and more than doubling the Concorde’s fastest speeds during its test. The state-of-the-art engine’s successful Mach 4 flight (3,106 mph / 5,000 km/h) at 65,000 ft (19,812 m) marks a crucial step for the Chinese company as the engine is going to be the heart of the future Yunxing supersonic passenger plane, also designed by Space Transportation. Traditional ramjet engines work by relying on the aircraft’s speed to scoop up and compress…

Welcome to this month’s random selection of “things I’ve really loved”. There’s a full video version further down the page and I do highly recommend you watch it if you’ve a spare ten or so minutes. It gives you an extended ramble about each of the bits and pieces I’m about to talk about whilst also bringing them alive in full technicolor and Doby surround sound. (I have no idea about the last two things I just promised, it just sounded good.) I did want to include “dried flowers” in this month’s favourites but ran out of space – it…

I’ve been oil pulling with coconut oil for years. I read about oil pulling benefits a long time ago and how it may reverse tooth decay and help remineralize and whiten teeth.  I’ve definitely noticed less plaque and better dental health since starting! Recently, I came across some articles online that questioned oil pulling and whether it could be dangerous. Here’s what I’ve learned about oil pulling and its pros and cons for overall health. What is Coconut Oil Pulling? Oil pulling is an ancient practice that comes to us from Ayurvedic medicine, the traditional medicine of India. It’s long…

In a comprehensive analysis of more than 100 clinical trials involving nearly 15,000 adults, researcher have found that there’s one clear path to improving symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) – but even then it’s not all good news. A network meta-analysis (NMA) by the University of Oxford’s Department of Psychiatry at Warneford Hospital, co-designed by a panel of people with lived experience of ADHD, has found that only stimulants, and to a lesser degree the norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor atomoxetine, are effective in treating core symptoms in the short-term. “To our knowledge, this is the first component NMA on ADHD in…
