Scientists from Australia and the United States have found a new way to alter the DNA of bacterial cells – a process used to make many vital medicines including insulin – much more efficiently than standard industry techniques. Instead of opening bacteria cell walls with harsh chemicals or high temperatures to insert DNA, the team used high-frequency radio waves, a much gentler approach that led to many more of the cells taking on the DNA and surviving. The study, led by RMIT University in collaboration with other Australian universities and WaveCyte Biotechnologies in the US, used radio waves at the…

Hair loss and hair thinning have been hot topics lately, haven’t they? Some of my family members, including my husband, have been dealing with hair loss for years. I see how it hurts their confidence, and I know it can be particularly devastating for women. Some people use hair growth products because they suffer from alopecia, thyroid disease, hormone imbalances, autoimmune disorders, PCOS, or other health problems. Some (okay, I would say…
This time of year everyone is going nuts over pumpkin pie spice. While it is delicious in everything from pumpkin pie to homemade lattes, apple pie spice is another fall favorite. With its intense flavor profile, it’s the perfect addition to your spice cabinet. What is Apple Pie Spice? This yummy blend of aromatic spices is often used in the cooler months to flavor apple pie and other apple dishes. It’s very similar to pumpkin pie spice, but my version omits the ground cloves and instead adds cardamom. Some people don’t like the flavor of cardamom, so it can be…

Robots and cameras of the future could be made of liquid crystals, thanks to a new discovery that significantly expands the potential of the chemicals already common in computer displays and digital watches. The findings, a simple and inexpensive way to manipulate the molecular properties of liquid crystals with light exposure, are now published in Advanced Materials. “Using our method, any lab with a microscope and a set of lenses can arrange the liquid crystal alignment in any pattern they’d want,” said author Alvin Modin, a doctoral researcher studying physics at Johns Hopkins. “Industrial labs and manufacturers could probably adopt the…

I often keep fresh ginger around in case of upset stomachs (it can be a lifesaver during early pregnancy!). Ginger root also adds a tasty flavor to drinks, gingerbread, and even iced tea. On its own it can be a little spicy, but ginger syrup is a flavorful way to add a little sweetness to beverages and dishes. This warming herb has tons of health benefits and boosts circulation and immunity. It’s perfect (and tasty!) for cooler weather. Ginger Simple Syrup The traditional recipe for ginger syrup uses fresh ginger root and a sweetener, like brown sugar or organic cane…

The study marks a stepping stone towards the long-term goal of regenerating human limbs after amputation—and could one day even give snakes back their legs. In a collaborative study, researchers from Kyushu University and Harvard Medical School have identified proteins that can turn or “reprogram” fibroblasts — the most commonly found cells in skin and connective tissue — into cells with similar properties to limb progenitor cells. Publishing in Developmental Cell, the researchers’ findings have enhanced our understanding of limb development and have set the stage for regenerative therapy in the future. Globally, close to 60 million people are living…
